President confers Padma Shri on Sikkim's Naren Gurung for contributions to art

Naren Gurung, a celebrated artist from Sikkim, was conferred with the prestigious Padma Shri award by the President of India today in New Delhi. The honour recognizes his outstanding contributions to the field of Art, especially his efforts to preserve and promote the rich cultural heritage of Sikkim.

Born on January 21, 1957, Gurung has dedicated more than four decades of his life to the arts. A talented singer, musician, choreographer, and drama artist, he has been at the forefront of keeping Nepali folk literature and music alive in Sikkim. His performances across India and abroad have brought widespread attention to the cultural traditions of the region.

Apart from his artistic pursuits, Gurung has authored several books focusing on folk music and culture. His work has been widely appreciated, earning him many accolades over the years, including the Sikkim State Award, the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award and the Sikkim Sewa Samman.
