On May 28, 2025, Sikkim will celebrate a very special day as Prime Minister Narendra Modi, will visit the state to release a ₹50 commemorative coin. This coin marks the 50th anniversary of Sikkim becoming a part of India. The event will take place at Paljor Stadium in Gangtok, with Chief Minister Shri Prem Singh Tamang and other state leaders joining the ceremony.

Sikkim officially became the 22nd state of India on May 16, 1975. This year, the state completed 50 years of statehood. Chief Minister Tamang announced on May 14 that the Prime Minister would come to Sikkim to celebrate this golden jubilee.

The commemorative coin is special in many ways. It weighs 40 grams and is made of pure silver, according to Shri Sudhir Lunawat, a well-known expert on coins. One side of the coin shows a design that tells the story of Sikkim’s 50 years in India. The words “50 Glorious Years of Sikkim” are written in Hindi on the top and in English on the bottom of the coin. The other side shows the Lion Capital of Ashoka, which is India’s national emblem. Below it is the ₹ symbol and the number 50. The word “भारत” (Bharat) is written on the left and “India” on the right.

The coin has been made at the Government of India Mint in Kolkata. It was officially announced by the Ministry of Finance in a Gazette Notification on May 13, 2025. This coin is not meant for everyday use and will not be available in regular markets. Instead, collectors will be able to buy it a few days after the release through the Kolkata Mint.

Along with the coin release, a “Golden Jubilee Conclave” will be held at the same venue. This event will include cultural shows, talks, and exhibitions that show Sikkim’s history, its progress so far, and its plans for the future. The state is known for being eco-friendly and rich in culture, and the Prime Minister is expected to speak about how Sikkim has grown over the years to become a model state.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Sikkim unit, extended heartfelt gratitude to PM Modi and the Centre for honouring Sikkim’s cultural identity and national integration. “This historic gesture affirms Sikkim’s proud journey as an integral part of India and serves as a powerful symbol of unity and resilience,” the statement read.

The BJP further said that the collectible coin will not only preserve Sikkim’s rich legacy but also promote tourism and cultural pride, contributing to the region’s economic vibrancy.
