Prime Minister Narendra Modi has spoken about the concert economy, saying that live music events can help tourism, create jobs, and support local artists. He mentioned this while talking about Coldplay’s tour, but his words also relate to the debate in Sikkim over the Ed Sheeran concert.
The Sikkim government led by Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang is planning a big celebration for the state’s 50th Statehood Day. As part of this, they want Ed Sheeran to perform. The government says the event will bring tourists, business and global attention to Sikkim. CM Tamang has also made it clear that no government money will be used and sponsors will pay for the concert.
But opposition party Citizen Action Party (CAP) has criticized this plan. They claim the government is wasting public money. Now that PM Modi has spoken in favor of the concert economy, will the opposition still question the Ed Sheeran concert in Sikkim?
