Prime Minister Narendra Modi, addressing a gathering in Delhi on Friday, took a sharp dig at Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief Arvind Kejriwal over the alleged extravagant renovation of the Delhi Chief Minister’s residence. Modi emphasized that his focus has been on providing housing for millions of Indians rather than indulging in personal luxuries.

“I could have built a 'sheesh mahal' (glass palace) for myself, but my dream was to ensure that my fellow countrymen have permanent homes,” the Prime Minister declared while launching a housing project for slum dwellers in Ashok Vihar.

Modi contrasted his government’s achievements with what he termed as "open corruption" under the AAP-led Delhi government. “In the past decade, over four crore houses have been built for the poor under central schemes. This has transformed the lives of countless families and fulfilled their dreams of homeownership,” he said, drawing a stark comparison to the alleged opulence of Kejriwal's official residence.

The Prime Minister didn’t mince words as he accused AAP of mishandling governance in Delhi. “They have turned Delhi into a hub of scams—be it the liquor scam, school scam, or pollution scam. They openly engage in corruption and even flaunt it. It is nothing short of a disaster—an 'AAPda'—for Delhi,” Modi stated.

Referring to public discontent, he added, “Delhi is saying in unison, 'Aapda Ko Nahi Sahenge, Badal Kar Rahenge' (We will not tolerate the disaster, we will bring change).” Modi expressed confidence that the national capital would embrace a new era of governance focused on public welfare and integrity.

The Prime Minister also outlined his vision for the coming year, stressing the importance of good governance and improved living standards in Delhi. “The year 2025 will mark the beginning of a new era in the national capital—one centered on public welfare and national progress,” he remarked.

With Delhi assembly elections slated for early 2025, Modi’s remarks are seen as a direct challenge to the AAP’s political stronghold. While the ruling party has touted its education and healthcare initiatives, Modi’s comments highlight the BJP’s intent to focus on alleged governance failures and corruption in the lead-up to the polls.
