Former Sikkim Chief Minister and Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) President Pawan Chamling extended his warm greetings to the people of Sikkim, particularly the Tamang community, on the auspicious occasion of Sonam Lochhar.

In his message, Chamling highlighted the cultural and spiritual importance of Sonam Lochhar, which marks the rise of the new moon in the month of Magh as per the Bikram Sambat calendar. He described the festival as a time of hope, renewal, and prosperity, emphasizing the values of peace, harmony, and unity that it upholds.

“Sonam Lochhar is not just a celebration of changing seasons but also a reminder of the rich cultural heritage that strengthens our identity,” he stated.

Chamling also recalled the SDF government’s contributions to the Tamang community, mentioning that in 1995, Tamang was recognized as a state language, and in 1996, Sonam Lochhar was declared a gazetted holiday. He further noted that the SDF government played a key role in securing central OBC recognition for the Tamang community in 1995 and later fought for its tribal status, which was granted in 2003.

On this special occasion, Chamling offered prayers to the guardian deities of Sikkim, seeking their blessings for the well-being and prosperity of the state and its people.
