The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Transport, Tourism, and Culture paid a courtesy visit to the Governor of Sikkim, Om Prakash Mathur, at Raj Bhavan on June 29. The meeting brought together members of Parliament to discuss key developmental issues in the state, particularly in the areas of infrastructure, tourism and cultural preservation.

The delegation was led by Rajya Sabha MP and Committee Chairman Sanjay Kumar Jha. The visiting members included Rajiv Pratap Rudy, Surendra Nagar, Vishweshwar Hegde, Mohammad Abdullah, K. E. Prakash, and Neeraj Dangi. Also present at the meeting was the Lok Sabha MP from Sikkim, Dr. Indra Hang Subba.

One of the main topics of discussion was the ongoing and proposed development of national highways in Sikkim. The committee took special interest in the proposed National Highway-210, which aims to connect Melli to Singtam. The highway project is expected to improve regional connectivity, reduce travel time, and give a much-needed boost to the economic growth of the area. Members of the committee exchanged views on the project’s implementation and urged for timely execution of the plan.

Another important point raised during the meeting was the strengthening of tourism infrastructure in the state. Sikkim, known for its natural beauty and peaceful environment, is a growing tourist destination, but officials and committee members acknowledged the need for better facilities, easier access to remote locations, and sustainable tourism practices. Discussions included ideas on improving roads to tourist spots, better accommodations, and promotion of eco-tourism.

The meeting also focused on the importance of preserving Sikkim’s rich traditional art, culture, and heritage. Committee members appreciated the state's unique identity and diverse traditions, and agreed on the need to support ongoing government and community efforts aimed at promoting cultural practices, local craftsmanship, and historical sites. The discussions highlighted how culture can also become a key element of tourism growth when properly preserved and promoted.

Governor Om Prakash Mathur extended a warm welcome to the entire delegation and thanked them for taking interest in the state’s development. He expressed hope that their visit would bring more focus and support from the Centre for key infrastructure projects and cultural initiatives in Sikkim.

“The visit by the Parliamentary Standing Committee is a valuable opportunity for the state to share its concerns and suggestions on transport, tourism, and culture. I am confident that their recommendations will help Sikkim move forward on the path of inclusive and sustainable development,” the Governor said.
