Sikkim has achieved a proud moment in women’s football as young talent Abhista Basnett from Pakyong district has been named in the final 23-member squad of the India U-17 Women’s National Team for the upcoming SAFF U-17 Women’s Championship 2025 to be held in Bhutan.
The announcement has brought immense joy to the football fraternity of Sikkim, with many hailing it as a milestone for the state. Abhista’s selection is not only a personal achievement but also a matter of pride for her district and the entire state, as it highlights the growing presence of Sikkimese players on the national stage.
Abhista was earlier called for the national team trials conducted by the All India Football Federation (AIFF) in June 2025. After weeks of rigorous training and assessment, she has now secured her place in the final squad that will represent India in Bhutan. Her inclusion in the defenders’ line-up has been particularly appreciated, as it reflects her skill, dedication, and hard work over the years.
The India U-17 squad for the SAFF tournament is a balanced team, with promising players in all departments. The goalkeepers include Munni and Surajmuni Kumari, while the midfield will be led by Tamphasana Devi Konjengbam and other young talents. The defensive line, which now proudly features Abhista Basnett, also includes names like Alena Devi Sarangthem, Alisha Lyngdoh, Binita Horo, Anita Dungdung, and Beena Kumari among others. The forward line carries strong options as well, with Anushka Kumari, Nira Chanu Longjam, Pearl Fernandes, and Valaina Jada Fernandes making the cut.
The team will be guided by Head Coach Joakim Alexandersson, who has expressed confidence in the potential of the players. He noted that the squad has been carefully selected to strike a balance between defense and attack, with the hope of bringing home the championship title.
