The Forest and Environment Department of Sikkim successfully organized the first-ever Harit Yoga Programme at the picturesque Bojeytar Ground in Kartok, Pakyong. Held under the evocative theme “Where Wellness Meets the Wild,” the event sought to promote yoga in natural surroundings, reinforcing the connection between inner peace and environmental harmony.
The unique wellness event was graced by Hon’ble Minister for Education, Sports & Youth Affairs, and Law & Parliamentary Affairs, Shri Raju Basnett, who attended as the Chief Guest. He was joined by Special Guest Smt. Pamin Lepcha, Hon’ble MLA of 21-Gnathang Machong Constituency and Advisor to the Social Welfare and Women, Child, Senior Citizen & Persons with Disabilities Welfare Department.
The Harit Yoga initiative is a visionary step by the Forest and Environment Department aimed at fostering both personal well-being and sustainable environmental practices. By encouraging yoga sessions in serene, green locations, the programme promotes a lifestyle rooted in mindfulness, clean living, and a deep respect for nature. Bojeytar Ground, surrounded by the rich biodiversity of Pakyong, proved to be the perfect location for this experiential retreat.
Participants were treated to guided yoga sessions led by MO Ayush, Dr. Kuljan Lama, who introduced a series of asanas, breathing exercises, and meditation techniques. These sessions were crafted to promote relaxation, improve flexibility, and bring clarity of mind—essential tools in today’s fast-paced world.
Adding an ecological dimension to the event, a plantation drive was held under the “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” initiative, reinforcing the message of sustainability and respect for nature. Saplings were planted as symbolic acts of gratitude toward the Earth and as a commitment to greener living.
The event drew participation from a wide cross-section of society. Among the dignitaries present were Zilla Up-Adhakshya of Pakyong District, Smt. Prabha Pradhan; DC Pakyong, Shri Agwane Rohan Ramesh; Sr. SP Smt. Paru Ruchal; CCF, CF, DFO, RO & BO Pakyong from the Forest and Environment Department; ADC (Dev) Shri Robin Pd Sewa, CMO Pakyong, SDPO, various Heads of Departments, Panchayat members from Yakten and Namcheybong GPUs, and representatives from the Police and SSB. Also in attendance were SKM Youth VP Incharge Shri Sabin Subba, CLC President Shri Arun Subba, and energetic delegations from Nari Shakti, Youth Shakti, and the local community.
Chief Guest Raju Basnett, in his address, lauded the Forest Department’s efforts in conceptualizing such an innovative programme. “Yoga is not just a physical activity—it is a way of life. By bringing yoga into the heart of nature, we are reinforcing a lifestyle that respects the mind, body, and the environment. This fusion of wellness and wilderness is something we must continue to support,” he remarked.
Special Guest Smt. Pamin Lepcha echoed similar sentiments, encouraging more such initiatives that promote community wellness while also spreading environmental awareness. She emphasized the need for youth participation and women’s leadership in such movements, stating that societal health begins with empowered and conscious individuals.
Officials from the Forest Department noted that the Harit Yoga programme will not remain a one-time event. Plans are underway to replicate similar sessions in other eco-sensitive zones across Sikkim to ensure a wider outreach. They also highlighted the department’s commitment to integrating wellness-based tourism and conservation through such participatory platforms.
