In light of continuous heavy rainfall and massive landslides, the Permit Cell of Sikkim Police has announced that all tourist permits for North Sikkim will be suspended until further notice, effective April 25, 2025. The decision comes as more than 1,000 tourists are stranded in the region due to blocked roads and hazardous travel conditions.

The advisory, issued on April 24, 2025, highlights that significant landslides have occurred at Munshithang along the Lachen-Chungthang road and at Lema/Bob on the Lachung-Chungthang road, making these routes impassable. While the road to Chungthang remains open, authorities have warned that it is unsafe to travel at night due to the ongoing rainfall and the threat of more landslides.

"In view of the present situation, no permits will be issued for tourists planning to travel to North Sikkim," the Permit Cell stated in its official announcement. It also clarified that any permits previously issued for North Sikkim travel on April 25 have been cancelled.

Tour operators have been instructed to refrain from sending tourists towards North Sikkim, and police have urged everyone to cooperate and follow the safety measures to avoid accidents.

The landslides and heavy rain have created serious challenges in North Sikkim, which is a popular destination known for its breathtaking landscapes, including Lachen, Lachung, and Gurudongmar Lake. However, the region's hilly terrain makes it highly susceptible to landslides, particularly during the monsoon and pre-monsoon seasons, when rainfall is frequent and intense.

The tourism department has advised tourists to reconsider their travel plans to North Sikkim, urging them to explore alternative destinations within the state. Tour agencies and travelers are also encouraged to check with official sources before making any new travel arrangements.

For those who had already secured permits and planned trips to North Sikkim, local authorities are recommending rescheduling plans or choosing other safe destinations within Sikkim. Hotels, guides, and local service providers have also been notified of the changes to prevent confusion among tourists.
