Chief Minister of Sikkim Prem Singh Tamang has said that only candidates holding ITI (Industrial Training Institute) degrees will now be eligible for the Chief Minister’s Self Employment Scheme. The announcement signals a move toward ensuring that beneficiaries possess the necessary skills and training to run their businesses effectively.

Speaking at a public event, Chief Minister Tamang spoke about the importance of technical education in today’s evolving economy. “We have now created a new structure under the Chief Minister’s Self Employment Scheme,” he said.

Criticizing past practices, the Chief Minister pointed out that many individuals without any technical know-how or basic business skills were previously applying for assistance under the scheme. “People who didn’t even know how to run a shop or prepare something as basic as momos were being considered,” he noted. Using a touch of humor and a relatable example, CM Tamang said, “We don’t even know what to put in a momo or how to make one. But now people want to start a momo shop?”

He said that the new criteria would prevent unqualified applicants from misusing the opportunity and instead empower those who are genuinely trained and ready to build a livelihood. “Now, with you coming in, please open a real shop, run it with knowledge and skill, and build something sustainable,” he urged young people.
