Odisha CM speaks to Sikkim CM for swift rescue and support after Teesta bus tragedy

In the wake of the tragic bus accident in North Sikkim, where a tourist vehicle carrying 11 people plunged into the Teesta River along the Chungthang-Lachen highway, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has taken urgent steps to ensure the well-being of Odia citizens affected by the incident.

According to an official statement from the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) in Odisha, CM Majhi held discussions with Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang on Thursday, seeking prompt action for the rescue, medical treatment, and safe return of those from Odisha who were injured in the accident.

The mishap occurred on the evening of May 29 between Chungthang and Munshithang. The vehicle, carrying 10 tourists and a driver, fell into the fast-flowing Teesta River. So far, two persons have been rescued and shifted to STNM Hospital in Gangtok after receiving initial treatment at Chungthang field hospital. The search is still on for the remaining nine individuals.

CM Majhi expressed deep concern over the incident and thanked the Sikkim government for its swift response. He urged all possible support and coordination to be extended to the victims and their families, especially those hailing from Odisha.

Search and rescue operations are being carried out by a joint team comprising the local administration, Sikkim Police, ITBP, Indian Army, and NDRF personnel with help from local residents.
