A large-scale mock drill on disaster preparedness was successfully conducted today at the NTPC Power Project Barrage site in Salangdang, Soreng District. The exercise, carried out under the directive of District Collector cum Chairperson of the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), Mr. Dhiraj Subedi, was aimed at enhancing the readiness of both officials and the general public in the event of a natural calamity.

Organized by the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC), the mock drill focused on simulating real-life disaster response scenarios. It included rescue operations, evacuation procedures, and coordination mechanisms between various emergency response teams. The initiative was part of a broader directive issued during a recent monsoon preparedness meeting, where all power project authorities in the district were instructed to conduct such drills as a precautionary measure ahead of the rainy season.

Key officials who observed the exercise included SDM Headquarters Mr. Prem Kumar Subba and Disaster Preparedness Officer Mrs. Rajni Pega. The event also saw the participation of the Disaster Management Officer of Poolbazar Block, senior NTPC officials including the AGM Technical Services and AGM Project Manager, Safety Officers from NTPC, Avir Infrastructures, and Pinny, as well as the RVNL Project Manager.

Notably, the drill was supported by medical personnel from NTPC and disaster response teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) based in Siliguri and Pakyong. Representatives from the Land Revenue and Disaster Management Department (LR&DMD), Soreng, also played an active role.

The comprehensive nature of the drill showcased the district’s commitment to ensuring that all stakeholders are well-trained in disaster mitigation strategies. Speaking after the event, officials emphasized the importance of preparedness, especially during the monsoon season when the risk of landslides and flash floods increases.

“This mock drill is part of our continuous effort to educate and empower our teams and local communities. The goal is to build a resilient disaster response system that minimizes risks and protects lives,” said a senior NTPC official.
