To restore critical connectivity in North Sikkim, the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) is on the verge of completing a new bridge at Toong, which will reconnect Mangan with Chungthang and remote areas beyond. The development comes in line with the directives of the Hon’ble Chief Minister Shri Prem Singh Tamang, who has consistently emphasised the need for urgent infrastructure rehabilitation in the flood-affected regions.
The inauguration of the bridge is expected within the next few days, marking a milestone in the state’s ongoing recovery efforts following the devastating flash floods that washed away the previous structure. The absence of a functional bridge had left residents of Chungthang, Lachen, Lachung, and surrounding high-altitude villages cut off from the rest of the state, severely disrupting the movement of essential goods, emergency services, and tourism.
Thanks to the swift response and tireless work by the BRO, the new bridge at Toong stands as a symbol of resilience and efficient governance. Local authorities have praised the pace of construction, which was carried out under challenging terrain and unpredictable weather conditions. The structure is designed to be sturdier and more climate-resilient than its predecessor, ensuring long-term stability for this crucial mountain corridor.
"This bridge will not only restore connectivity but also bring back hope and economic activity to North Sikkim. It reflects the Chief Minister’s vision of leaving no citizen behind, especially in times of distress," said a district official overseeing the project.
