Namthang–Rateypani is preparing to host the grand 79th Independence Day celebration, which this year holds added significance as it coincides with the golden jubilee of Sikkim’s Statehood. As India marks 79 years of independence, the people of Sikkim will also be celebrating 50 years of becoming a full-fledged state of the Indian Union — a moment that stirs both historical reflection and collective pride.
The commemorative celebrations are being organised under the dynamic leadership of Area MLA Shri Sanjeet Kharel, whose guidance has brought together community leaders, local organisations, youth groups, and residents in a shared vision of unity and progress.
The organizing committee officially unveiled the first poster for the event this week, marking the symbolic launch of a countdown to what is expected to be one of the most vibrant and inclusive Independence Day celebrations in the region. The poster, a visual tribute to Sikkim’s journey over the last five decades, was met with enthusiasm and emotional resonance among locals, many of whom have lived through this transformative chapter in the state’s history.
“This is more than just a national celebration—it’s a celebration of who we are as Sikkimese,” said MLA Shri Sanjeet Kharel while addressing community members. “As we prepare for the 79th Independence Day, we also honour our golden milestone—50 years of Statehood. Let this celebration reflect our unity, our culture, and the progress we have achieved together.”
