Thenlay Tshering Bhutia, Honourable MLA from Kabi Lungchok Constituency, has been officially welcomed into the My Child From Wild adoption initiative of the Himalayan Zoological Park with his adoption of the elusive and majestic Clouded Leopard. Known for his distinct style — always seen in his trademark cowboy hat and camouflage jacket — the septuagenarian leader has now added a new chapter to his long and eventful public journey with this gesture of wildlife conservation.
Bhutia’s decision to adopt the Clouded Leopard, a rare and solitary feline known for its strength, resilience, and tree-hunting prowess, reflects his deep-rooted connection to the forest. Priced at ₹20,000, the adoption is both symbolic and personal. The Clouded Leopard, often referred to as the “Cat of the Clouds,” is the only big cat that can climb down trees head-first and even hang upside down from branches. It is a powerful representation of balance, survival, and quiet strength—traits that mirror the veteran MLA’s own life journey.
Before stepping into the political spotlight in 1994, Thenlay Tshering Bhutia served as a forest ranger for 10 years in sectors like Land Use, Working Plan, and RVP after receiving his forestry training in Byrnihat. A skilled footballer, archer, and volleyball champion during his training days, Bhutia is known not only as a politician but also as a man of many talents. His colleagues and constituents often describe him as a workaholic, approachable, cheerful, and even a hidden soup chef—famous for cooking up warm bowls of comfort that could rival the best kitchens.
Since joining politics, Shri Bhutia has carved out an exceptional legacy, winning five terms from Kabi Lungchok Constituency and serving as a minister for three terms. His uninterrupted political career, marked by perseverance and dedication, was briefly tested when he lost an election, but he came back stronger, reclaiming victory in the 2024 elections. His tenure makes him the longest-serving MLA from Kabi Lungchok—an achievement that sets a high standard for future legislators.
The inspiration behind his grounded values and unwavering commitment to social service comes from his father, the late Shri Sonam Tshering Bhutia, known as the Shotak Mondal and a respected community figure. “My father always told me to stand up for the weak and to do little things with great love,” Shri Thenlay reminisced. “So that in the winter of one’s life, one can look back with pride.”
