In a determined move to tackle the long-standing water crisis in Namchi, a high-level site inspection was conducted today under the ongoing initiative, Mission Bermeli. The visit focused on a precarious stretch of terrain situated below Jaubari and Dabuwa and above Chamgaon — a vital zone where the main water pipeline supplying Namchi is laid.
This fragile area, vulnerable to landslides during the monsoon season, has consistently posed a threat to the integrity of the pipeline infrastructure. Frequent damage in this zone has led to repeated disruptions in water supply, sparking concern among residents and prompting urgent government intervention.
The site visit was spearheaded by Hon’ble MLA of 11-Namchi Singithang, Shri Satish Chandra Rai, who was joined by key officials and representatives from multiple departments. His presence underscored the seriousness of the situation and the government's commitment to finding a lasting solution.
Among those accompanying him were SDM Namchi Shri Saran Kalikotey, representing the Deputy Commissioner of Namchi District; Social Welfare Officer Shri Shayam S. Pradhan; Assistant Engineer of the Irrigation Department Shri Khemlall Chettri and his team; and representatives from the National Highways 7/10 division. Together, they carried out a joint inspection of the danger zone, assessing both the technical vulnerabilities and the broader environmental impact.
In a parallel effort to support long-term ecological stability, the site visit also included a plantation drive. Native saplings were planted strategically along the slope to strengthen the soil and reduce the risk of erosion — a proactive step towards preventing future landslides.
Speaking at the site, MLA Satish Rai directed all concerned departments to accelerate the preparation and submission of a Detailed Project Report (DPR). He emphasized that the report should include comprehensive and sustainable measures to protect the pipeline and ensure uninterrupted water supply to Namchi residents.
“This issue has plagued our community for far too long. With the monsoon approaching, we cannot afford further delays. It is essential that departments work in full coordination to ensure timely action,” said MLA Rai.
