Minor gives birth to baby in Pakyong, investigation underway

A 16-year-old girl recently gave birth at a hospital in Gangtok . Officials are now investigating the case, which reportedly involves a younger male relative.

The matter came to the attention of the District Child Protection Unit in Pakyong after they were directed to look into the well-being of a 16-year-old girl who had been admitted to a hospital in Gangtok. A worker from the District Child Protection Unit visited the hospital to understand the situation firsthand.

During the interaction at the hospital, it was learned that sometime between July and August of last year (2024), the young girl had reportedly been sexually assaulted. The incident is said to have occurred at her home when she was alone with a younger male relative. Her mother, it was reported, was away at work, involved in a local employment program (MGNREGA), at the time of the alleged assault.

Following this event, the young girl experienced a change in her monthly cycle starting in August 2024. However, despite this significant change, she did not share what had happened with any of her family members.

The situation took a turn on June 8, 2025. The young girl suddenly experienced severe stomach pain. Her mother, understandably concerned, quickly took her to a local health center in Pakyong. There, the doctor on duty said that the girl was pregnant. Given the seriousness of the situation, she was immediately sent to a larger hospital in Gangtok. It was at this hospital that she subsequently gave birth to a baby boy.

Officials have confirmed that a young person, a 13-year-old male, has already been taken into custody in connection with this case. The case is being handled under relevant sections of a law designed to protect children from sexual offenses.
