Sikkim Health Minister G.T. Dhungel attended the “Yoga Samavesh” programme at Raj Bhawan in Gangtok on Tuesday. The event, organised by the Health & Family Welfare Department of Sikkim under the National Ayush Mission, was graced by the Hon’ble Governor of Sikkim, Shri Om Prakash Mathur.
Held in the serene lawns of Raj Bhawan, the Yoga Samavesh was more than just a routine observance of physical fitness—it was a heartfelt affirmation that yoga truly transcends all barriers. Among the most touching moments of the event was the enthusiastic participation of specially-abled children from two special schools in Gangtok. Their grace, dedication, and determination as they performed various yoga asanas left the audience visibly moved.
Minister Dhungel, visibly inspired by the children's performance, praised the inclusivity of the programme. Speaking at the event, he said, “This gathering is a powerful celebration of unity, strength, and human spirit. Yoga is a gift that belongs to everyone, regardless of age, background, or physical ability. I commend the organisers for making this event so inclusive and meaningful.”
The Minister also highlighted the role of yoga in building both physical and mental resilience, especially in today’s fast-paced and high-stress world. He stressed the importance of incorporating yoga into daily routines not just for individuals, but as a broader public health measure.
Governor Om Prakash Mathur also shared his thoughts, applauding the efforts of the Health & Family Welfare Department for successfully hosting a programme that brought together people from all walks of life. In his brief remarks, the Governor stated that yoga not only nurtures the body and mind but also connects people through a shared experience of harmony and discipline.
The National Ayush Mission, which aims to promote traditional systems of health like Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Siddha, and Homeopathy, has been at the forefront of integrating yoga into the state's public health initiatives. Programmes like Yoga Samavesh serve to raise awareness about the accessibility and benefits of yoga, especially when practiced regularly.
The presence of specially-abled children was a highlight of the event. With careful assistance and encouragement from their instructors, the children performed yoga postures with incredible poise. Their enthusiasm captured the essence of the day: that yoga, with its simplicity and universality, is truly for all.
