In a vibrant celebration of Sikkim's historical legacy, Minister Arun Upreti joined Governor Om Prakash Mathur and Minister Ven Sonam Lama at the Namgyal Institute of Technology (NIT), Deorali, to inaugurate the Founder’s Day Exhibition titled “An Extraordinary Friendship: Chogyal Palden Thondup Namgyal and Dewan Sahib Nari K. Rustomji.”
Held within the scenic campus of NIT, Gangtok, the exhibition offered a rich tribute to one of the most remarkable partnerships in Sikkim’s modern political history. The event commemorated the close bond between Chogyal Palden Thondup Namgyal, the last sovereign ruler of Sikkim, and Dewan Sahib Nari K. Rustomji, a senior Indian civil servant and statesman who played a crucial advisory role during the transition period of Sikkim in the mid-20th century.
In his address, Minister Arun Upreti described the exhibition as “a wonderful celebration of Sikkim's rich history and heritage,” stressing the importance of remembering such friendships that contributed significantly to the region’s political stability and cultural identity. “It is essential that we not only celebrate such moments but also pass on these stories to our younger generations so they understand the depth of our state’s legacy,” he added.
The Hon’ble Governor, in his keynote address, reflected on the rare harmony between the monarchy and the bureaucracy at a time when Sikkim was undergoing significant political change. “The trust and mutual respect between Chogyal Palden Thondup Namgyal and Nari Rustomji laid a foundation for diplomacy, progress, and a shared vision of Sikkim's future,” he remarked.
Minister Ven Sonam Lama also praised the initiative, calling it an inspiring step towards educating the public about Sikkim’s nuanced and often underrepresented historical narratives. “These stories of leadership and friendship offer lessons in governance and humanity,” he said.
