In Sikkim, the MI-172 helicopter services are all set to resume operations from Burtuk Heliport. The services will be operated by Sky One Airways Ltd. in partnership with Sikkim Tourism Development Corporation (STDC), offering a convenient link between Burtuk Heliport in Gangtok and Bagdogra Airport.
The long-awaited resumption of the helicopter service marks an important step in improving connectivity for both residents and tourists. On arrival at Burtuk Heliport, Captain Anand Malik, Captain JVS Guron, and the crew members received a warm welcome from STDC Chairman Shri Lukendra Rasaily, along with AGM (Operations) Tejpal Pradhan and the entire Burtuk Heliport team. The officials expressed optimism that commercial operations would begin very soon, subject to favorable weather conditions.
The MI-172 helicopter has a seating capacity of 20 passengers, making it a practical and time-saving option for those traveling between Gangtok and Bagdogra. Ticket bookings can be made by calling the STDC ticket reservation counter between 10 am and 5 pm at landline number 03592-203960 (Gangtok) or the duty mobile number 7318906677. Tickets can also be booked in person by visiting the STDC Travel Division office at MG Marg, Gangtok. The fare for the Gangtok–Bagdogra route has been fixed at ₹4,500 per person for a one-way journey, with the same rate applicable in reverse.
As per the guidelines, passengers are allowed to carry only hand baggage weighing up to 10 kg. The size of the baggage must not exceed 55 cm x 40 cm x 20 cm (21.6 inches x 15.7 inches x 7.8 inches) in compliance with DGCA rules. Authorities have stressed that safety will remain the top priority for all flights.
The helicopter service between Gangtok and Bagdogra has always been a crucial travel option, especially during landslides, roadblocks, or emergencies. With its resumption, residents, tourists, and business travelers can once again look forward to saving valuable travel time and enjoying a more comfortable journey.
AGM (Operations) Tejpal Pradhan said that the STDC is committed to providing safe, reliable, and efficient services to the people of Sikkim. “We are working hard to ensure smooth operations, but as always, flights will depend on weather conditions to ensure passenger safety,” he said.
