Police personnel at Melli Checkpost in Namchi district intercepted a man on Monday evening and recovered a large quantity of contraband substances cleverly concealed inside Amazon-wrapped plastic packets.
According to official sources, the incident took place on August 18, 2025, at around 5 p.m., when duty personnel stationed at Melli Checkpost stopped a taxi returning from Pakyong district. During the course of routine checking, the police noticed suspiciously packed items in the vehicle. On further examination, the packets turned out to contain commercial quantities of contraband.
The individual carrying the substances was identified as Shiva Kr. Gadaily, a resident of Jorethang, South Sikkim. He had boarded the taxi from Kirney in West Bengal and was attempting to re-enter Sikkim with the items. Officials revealed that the contraband was carefully wrapped in Amazon-branded delivery plastics, apparently to avoid raising suspicion and to give the impression that the goods were legitimate online parcels.
The recovery was made after a meticulous search by the police team posted at the checkpoint. The operation was conducted under the direct supervision of the Station House Officer (SHO) of Melli Police Station, while the seizure itself was carried out by Police Inspector Gaurav.
Following the recovery, a case under the Sikkim Anti-Drugs Act (SADA) was registered at Melli Police Station. Police officials said that the investigation is ongoing and efforts are being made to trace the supply chain and the larger network behind the smuggling attempt.
