A massive forest fire broke out in the jungle surrounding Khopa, located under the Malbasey ward of Geyzing-Bermiok constituency in West Sikkim, triggering urgent response efforts from fire services, forest officials, and local police. The blaze, which erupted amidst dry conditions, has rapidly spread due to the steep terrain and dense vegetation, raising serious concerns for nearby settlements.
Authorities reported that the fire is particularly active along the cliff area beneath the Geyzing-Legship road, making it difficult for personnel to access and contain the flames. As of now, the fire remains uncontrolled in certain pockets, especially those located in hard-to-reach slopes, though coordinated efforts are underway.
Teams from the Sikkim Fire and Emergency Services, Forest Department, and West District Police have been mobilized and are working round-the-clock to bring the situation under control. Firefighters remain on high alert, with special focus on preventing the fire from spreading to residential areas, which lie perilously close to the burning zone.
Local residents have been urged to remain vigilant, and some have voluntarily joined in efforts to create fire lines and assist emergency teams. The steep and rocky topography has posed serious challenges to the operation, making it nearly impossible for large firefighting vehicles to access certain areas.
Officials have not reported any injuries or property loss as of yet, but the risk to wildlife and ecological damage remains significant. Forest officials fear the fire could spread further if not controlled soon, given the dry conditions and strong mountain winds.
This is one of several forest fires to hit the Himalayan region in recent weeks, attributed largely to rising temperatures and low humidity. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and are prepared to seek additional assistance if the fire escalates.
