A 35-year-old woman from Mangan district has fallen prey to an online job scam, losing a total of Rs 6 lakh to fraudsters who promised her attractive returns through a fake work-from-home offer.
According to police sources, the incident occurred between April 8 and April 15, 2025, when the woman came across a job advertisement on Facebook. The ad claimed to offer a genuine work-from-home opportunity with good earnings. Trusting the post, she reached out to the contacts listed in the ad and was soon lured into transferring money in the hopes of making more in return.
The woman was assured that her initial payments would lead to higher returns through a series of tasks. Over the next few days, she transferred ₹6,00,000 in multiple transactions to various bank accounts shared by the scammers. However, once the payments were made, the individuals on the other end stopped responding, raising her suspicions.
Realizing that she had been cheated, the woman immediately lodged a complaint with the police. Acting on her report, the Sadar Police Station registered a case under Sections 318(3), 319(2), and 111(2)(b) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023.
Police have begun a formal investigation to identify and locate the individuals behind the fraud. Efforts are underway to trace the bank accounts and digital trails used by the accused to execute the scam.
