Lieutenant Shashank Tiwari of the SIKKIM SCOUTS laid down his life while saving a fellow soldier during an operational patrol in North Sikkim. The 23-year-old officer, barely six months into his military service, showed exceptional bravery and selflessness in the line of duty.

The incident occurred around 11:00 AM on May 22, during a Route Opening Patrol being led by Lt. Tiwari towards a Tactical Operating Base (TOB) in a remote part of Sikkim. The post was being prepared for future deployment and required careful access through challenging mountainous terrain. As the patrol moved forward, Agniveer Stephan Subba slipped while crossing a log bridge and fell into a powerful mountain stream. Without a second thought, Lt. Tiwari jumped into the rushing waters in a brave attempt to rescue him.

Naik Pukar Katel, another member of the patrol, followed quickly to assist. Together, the two managed to pull the drowning Agniveer to safety. However, the strong current swept away Lt. Tiwari. Despite desperate efforts by the patrol team, his body was found 800 metres downstream by 11:30 AM.

Lt. Shashank Tiwari was commissioned into the Indian Army on December 14, 2024. In his short service span, he had already earned the deep respect of his comrades through his leadership and dedication. His decision to jump into the icy waters, risking and ultimately losing his own life, speaks volumes of his character and courage.

The young officer hailed from a family that is now left shattered; he is survived by his grieving parents and a sister.

The Indian Army has paid tribute to Lt. Tiwari, calling his sacrifice an embodiment of the Army’s core values; selfless service, integrity, duty, and camaraderie. He upheld the proud tradition of leading from the front and putting the lives of others before his own.
