The Sukhim Yakthung Sapsok Songchumbho (SYSS), a prominent socio-cultural organisation of the Limboo community in Sikkim, has strongly objected to the recent costume worn by Miss Universe India 2025 contestant, Ms. Jackielynn Pradhan.
According to SYSS, the contestant was seen wearing an ornament resembling the Samyangphung below her waist in the front part of her attire. The organisation stated that this act was deeply offensive because the Samyangphung is not a decorative ornament but a sacred cultural symbol of the Limboo tribal community. Traditionally, it is worn with respect on the head by Limboo women and holds significant cultural and spiritual meaning.
The organisation expressed that placing such a revered symbol on the lower part of the body amounted to cultural insensitivity and had hurt the sentiments of the Limboo people across Sikkim. “This is not only a matter of dress design but an insult to the faith, history, and cultural identity of the entire Limboo community,” the press statement read.
The controversy deepened after a clarification video circulated by Mr. Bijay Subba, which SYSS described as “unsatisfactory and unacceptable.” Following this, designer Vaibhav Yadav released another video, claiming that the design was based on an Egyptian Queen motif and had no connection with Limboo traditions. However, SYSS dismissed this explanation as misleading and not in line with the facts.
The General Secretary of SYSS, speaking on behalf of the community, said that the association condemns both the costume and the clarifications provided. He added that unless a proper explanation and apology are issued, the organisation would be compelled to initiate strict action against those responsible.
