An elderly woman was attacked by a leopard in Melli Dara on March 2, following several days of reports about missing domestic animals, including goats and chickens, in the area.

In response to growing concerns from residents, Forest and Wildlife Department officials had set up a cage in Turuk, Taksharey, in an attempt to capture the predator. However, the situation escalated with today’s attack, prompting swift action from forest officials. The department successfully traced the leopard’s movement, tranquilized it, and captured the animal. The big cat has now been relocated to the Himalayan Zoological Park in Gangtok for further observation.

Following the incident, senior officials from the Forest Department visited the injured woman’s family to assess her condition. She was initially rushed to Kalimpong for medical treatment and later referred to the New STNM Hospital in Gangtok for further care.
