Landslide on Toong-Partem road claims three lives, injures two in North Sikkim

A massive landslide during road construction work on the Toong-Partem PT-4685 road in North Sikkim claimed three lives and left two injured on August 19, officials confirmed. The incident occurred around 3:30 pm while formation cutting work was being carried out between Km 79.200 and 79.400 under 129 RCC GREF.

According to police, the deceased included Lokhiram Murmu, 40, of Chirang district, Assam, who was engaged at Tamze DETT, 129 RCC. He was working alongside 15 casual labourers and engineers when the landslide struck. Two others—Junior Engineer (Civil) Rajeev Kumar, 47, and DES Gurudev, 30—sustained minor injuries. They were rushed to STNM Hospital, Sochagang, and later discharged after receiving medical aid.

A case (Phodong PS UD Case No. 03/2025) under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, was registered based on an FIR lodged by Avinash Chandra, AE (Civil), 44, of 129 RCC GREF. Investigating officer Sl. Loday Tshering Lepcha has initiated proceedings, with inquest conducted in presence of Magistrate Tashi Wangyal Bhutia.

The deceased’s body has been preserved at STNM Hospital mortuary, as post-mortem could not be conducted due to technical reasons. Police said witness statements under Section 180 BNSS 2023 have been recorded, and further investigation is underway.
