In North Sikkim, the District Collector of Mangan has announced that permits for travel to Lachung will commence from Monday. These permits will be issued exclusively for the destinations of Lachung, Yumthang Valley, and Zero Point, catering to both domestic and foreign tourists.
To visit these areas, travelers must obtain the necessary permits. Indian nationals are required to present a valid voter ID, passport, or driving license, along with two passport-sized photographs. For foreign nationals, a Protected Area Permit (PAP) is mandatory, which can be obtained from the Tourism Office in Gangtok, the District Administrative Center in Mangan, or the Sub-Divisional Magistrate’s Office in Chungthang. Additionally, foreign tourists must carry a valid passport, visa, and two passport-sized photographs.
Tour operators have been strongly advised to instruct their drivers to follow the prescribed timings to ensure smooth traffic flow and safety along the challenging hilly routes.
Lachung, situated at an altitude of approximately 8,600 feet, serves as the base for excursions to Yumthang Valley and Zero Point. Yumthang Valley, often referred to as the "Valley of Flowers," is renowned for its vibrant rhododendron blooms and picturesque landscapes. Zero Point, located about 25 kilometers from Yumthang, offers breathtaking views of snow-capped peaks and is a favored spot for adventure enthusiasts.
Given the high-altitude nature of these destinations, visitors are advised to take necessary precautions. It is recommended to wear adequate warm clothing, including snow boots, gloves, and overcoats, which are available for rent at Yumthang Market. Travelers should also carry sufficient cash, as there are no ATMs in the vicinity.
