Jasprit Bumrah’s fiery spell revives India’s hopes in Gabba Test

Indian pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah showcased his brilliance on Day 2 of the third Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test at the Gabba, claiming his 12th five-wicket haul in Test cricket. Bumrah’s remarkable performance brought India back into contention, restricting Australia to 347 for 6 at stumps after a commanding counterattack by Steve Smith and Travis Head.
Bumrah’s heroics began early in the day, as he dismissed openers Usman Khawaja and Nathan McSweeney in a scintillating first-hour spell. The 31-year-old’s impeccable seam control and unwavering accuracy set the tone, helping India recover from a challenging start. This marked his fourth five-wicket haul on Australian soil, equaling Anil Kumble's record and placing him among India’s finest bowlers in Test history, trailing only Kapil Dev.
The Indian bowlers faced a daunting task after rain curtailed play on Day 1. Steve Smith and Travis Head capitalized on a flattening pitch, punishing the Indian attack with a massive partnership. Head’s explosive 152 off 160 balls, combined with Smith’s elegant century, seemed to put Australia firmly in control.
However, the game took a dramatic turn with the introduction of the second new ball in the 80th over. Bumrah, returning to the attack with renewed energy, dismissed Smith with a deceptive delivery that induced a false drive, expertly caught by Rohit Sharma at slip. Soon after, Mitchell Marsh fell prey to Bumrah’s precision, edging to Virat Kohli at second slip.
The highlight of Bumrah’s spell came with the dismissal of the in-form Travis Head. Switching to a round-the-wicket angle, Bumrah bowled a delivery that angled in before straightening just enough to kiss the edge, stunning the batter.
In a span of just 12 balls, Bumrah dismantled Australia’s middle order, turning the tide for India after a punishing afternoon. Former England captain Michael Vaughan praised Bumrah’s unrelenting bowling, calling it a "masterclass in hitting the perfect length."
Despite Australia’s dominance for most of the day, Bumrah’s late heroics provided India with a fighting chance. As the Gabba Test progresses, his spell may prove pivotal in shaping the outcome of this high-stakes encounter.
