In a major decision by the International Cricket Council (ICC), India’s matches in the upcoming ICC Men’s Champions Trophy, set for February 19 to March 9, 2025, will be held at a neutral venue rather than in Pakistan, the original host. This agreement is part of the newly adopted hybrid model, which will see Pakistan’s matches also played on neutral turf until 2028, as part of reciprocal arrangements.

This shift comes after prolonged negotiations, with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) initially opposing the hybrid model. However, they eventually agreed, citing mutual benefits for both parties. The new format will apply to all ICC events through 2028, including the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025, which is hosted by India, and the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, jointly hosted by India and Sri Lanka.

The choice of neutral venues for the Champions Trophy matches, including India’s games, will be made by the tournament host and approved by the ICC. While the exact location is still under wraps, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has indicated that the UAE is a preferred option.

This hybrid model aims to prevent potential logistical and diplomatic conflicts in the lead-up to major tournaments. India has not played in Pakistan since the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, citing security concerns. While Pakistan visited India for the 2023 World Cup, India played its Asia Cup matches in Sri Lanka, and bilateral cricketing relations have been stalled since 2013.

The announcement also confirmed that Pakistan will host the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in 2028, with neutral venue arrangements applying to that tournament as well.

India has been placed in Group A for the 2025 Champions Trophy alongside Pakistan, Bangladesh, and New Zealand, while Group B includes Australia, England, South Africa, and Afghanistan. This will be the first ICC event held in Pakistan since 1996.
