As part of the ongoing Sikkim Paryavaran Parva observance, a spirited Green Walk was organised today in the state capital with the goal of raising environmental awareness and promoting sustainable living. The event, held under the theme "Leave a Green Legacy", brought together citizens, government officials, and environmental enthusiasts in a unified call for ecological responsibility.
The walk was flagged off by Hon’ble Minister for Forest and Environment, Shri Pintso Namgyal Lepcha, from M.G. Marg to Deorali, Gangtok, early this morning. In his address, the Minister highlighted the urgent need for conservation efforts and community participation in safeguarding Sikkim’s rich natural heritage. He also urged citizens to adopt greener habits in their daily lives to ensure a healthier planet for future generations.
Accompanying the Minister were Hon’ble Advisor to the Forest & Environment Department, Tenzing Norbu Lamtha, and several officials from the Forest & Environment Department, Government of Sikkim. Their participation reflected the government’s active role in promoting eco-conscious policies and inclusive environmental engagement.
Participants marched with banners, placards, and chants reinforcing the event’s message, drawing attention from passersby and local businesses along the route. Many of the walkers were students and youth groups, symbolising the growing eco-consciousness among the younger generation.
The Green Walk is part of a series of programs being held from July 1 to 15 under Sikkim Paryavaran Parva, a statewide environmental campaign aimed at fostering awareness about conservation, afforestation, waste management, and climate change. Various districts have been organising plantation drives, clean-up missions, and awareness sessions as part of this initiative.
