The Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services (AH & VS) Department of Pakyong District successfully concluded the final leg of the Goat Distribution Drive under the Rainfed Area Development (RAD) Programme at Pachey village. This marks the completion of the crossbred goat distribution initiative across all six districts of Sikkim.
As part of the drive, a total of 30 crossbred goats—24 females and 6 males—were handed over to selected beneficiaries from the Pachey Phirphirey Cluster. These goats, specially chosen for their breeding potential, are expected to support sustainable livestock practices in the region and enhance the productivity of smallholder farming systems.
Dr. Tashi Chozang Bhutia, Additional Director of Small Ruminants HQ, stated that the earlier phases of the drive had already been implemented in five districts, with Pakyong serving as the final distribution centre. He underscored the pivotal role small ruminants play in boosting income and ensuring nutritional security in rainfed and hilly regions like Sikkim.
“Goats are low-maintenance yet highly beneficial livestock. Their adaptability to diverse terrains makes them ideal for farmers in rural and remote areas. This programme will not only strengthen local animal husbandry but also uplift the socio-economic status of beneficiary families,” Dr. Bhutia said.
The event also included the distribution of vital veterinary supplies such as dewormers and essential medicines, equipping farmers with tools to safeguard animal health and improve longevity and productivity.
Present at the event were Additional Director Dr. Anjala Pradhan, Panchayat President of Pachey Samsung GPU H.B. Gurung, Panchayat Member Rosila Gurung, and other local leaders and community members who commended the department’s efforts.
