Gangtok hosts Pre-Women’s Day celebration under Beti Bachao Beti Padhao initiative

A Pre-Women’s Day celebration was organized at Kalyan Samaj Community Hall, Deorali, under the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP) initiative by the Women, Child, Senior Citizens, and Divyangjan Welfare Department, Gangtok District. The event, led by Social Welfare Officer Ms. Manikala Gurung, aimed at recognizing women’s contributions and promoting gender equality.
The program was graced by several dignitaries, including Chief Guest Tany Doma Bhutia, Chairperson of the Sikkim State Commission for Women, and Guest of Honor Mr. Tushar Nikhare (IAS), District Collector of Gangtok District. Other notable attendees included senior officials from the Women and Child Development Department, Gangtok Municipal Corporation, and representatives from various self-help groups and welfare organizations.
Manikala Gurung welcomed the gathering, emphasizing that Women’s Day is not just a celebration but a recognition of women's achievements across various fields. Cultural performances, including a welcome song by Social Welfare Inspectors and a special dance by Ms. Yankeela’s group from Bhusuk Naitam GPU, added vibrancy to the event.
Addressing the audience, Tany Doma Bhutia highlighted the rising cases of domestic violence and urged women to use helpline services. District Collector Tushar Nikhare stressed the need for women’s active participation in Sikkim’s development, aligning with the state’s vision of ‘Samardhi Sikkim, Samartha Sikkim, and Sunualo Sikkim.’
A felicitation ceremony honored exemplary women, including gold medalist boxer Pema Ongmu Bhutia, successful entrepreneur Yangchen Doma Bhutia, and professional driver Ms. Sonam Diki Sherpa, for breaking societal barriers.
