Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang has announced a series of big urban projects aimed at changing the face of Gangtok and making it a model city for the future.

Speaking after a detailed review meeting on Thursday, the Chief Minister said the discussions were focused on three major developments — a Public Utility Centre at MG Marg, the Ridge Park Development Project, and a Proposed Cable Car System for Gangtok. The meeting was attended by Urban Development Minister Bhoj Raj Rai, Chief Secretary R. Telang, heads of departments, senior officials, and other key stakeholders.

The Chief Minister explained that the team looked closely at important points like where the stations for the cable car would be located, the exact alignment, the cost of the projects, possible funding models, and the time needed to complete them. “I have told all departments to work together smoothly and speed up the work,” he said.

According to the CM, these projects are part of the Sikkim Urban Vision 2047, a long-term plan to develop Gangtok in line with the national vision of Viksit Bharat and the state’s goal of Viksit Sikkim. The plan aims to address major urban issues while keeping a balance between modern facilities and the city’s traditional charm.

The proposed Public Utility Centre at MG Marg is expected to offer improved facilities for both residents and visitors, easing the pressure on existing infrastructure. The Ridge Park Development Project will focus on adding more green spaces, creating recreational areas, and improving the environment in the heart of the city. The cable car system, once completed, is likely to improve mobility within Gangtok, reduce traffic congestion, and offer a new attraction for tourists.

“These are not just infrastructure works. They are part of our shared dream for a city that is resilient, inclusive, and full of cultural life,” CM Tamang said. He added that the projects will make Gangtok more modern, more accessible, and better for the people who live here, while also preserving the unique heritage of Sikkim.
