Football fever grips Pakyong as Independence Day Tournament enters day three

The third day of the 79th Independence Day Open Knockout Football Tournament 2025 lit up the St. Xavier’s School Ground in Pakyong with high-energy matches, vibrant cultural performances, and a wave of patriotic enthusiasm, as Sikkim continues to mark its 50 Glorious Years of Statehood.

Organized by the Pakyong Sporting Club in collaboration with the District Administrative Centre, the tournament is being celebrated under the theme “Nasha Mukt Sikkim,” echoing Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang-Golay’s vision of a drug-free state. The event has steadily attracted large crowds, reflecting strong community spirit and support for both sports and the social message.

The day’s proceedings were graced by Shri Arun Upreti, Hon’ble Minister for Rural Development and Cooperation Departments, as the Chief Guest. He was joined by Smt. Laden Lhamu Bhutia, Zilla Adhyaksha of Pakyong District. Other dignitaries present included Shri B.B. Chettri, Shri Sangay Gyatso Bhutia, Shri Robin Pd. Sewa, Shri Suman Sanker, and Shri Kailash Khatiwara. Special Guests like Shri Sangay Tamang, Shri Kewal Sharma, Shri Bivek Chettri, and Shri Jayant Dulal added significance to the day’s celebrations.

Cultural segments played an integral part, with enthralling performances by Rolep GPU and Bhai’s School reflecting the rich local traditions. The St. Xavier’s Bagpiper Band brought a ceremonial feel to the event, while Kuzu, the cheerful mascot of Sikkim@50, delighted players and spectators alike with animated interactions.

On the field, 20-Chujachen edged past Pachey United with a 2–1 win in the opening match. The second clash witnessed a thrilling battle as Brotherhood FC secured a 2–1 victory against Denzong Boys, maintaining the competitive excitement that has become the hallmark of the tournament.
