On the occasion of National Fish Farmers Day 2025, Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang extended warm greetings to fish farmers across the state and the nation, recognizing their essential role in ensuring food security, rural livelihoods, and sustainable development.
In his message, the Chief Minister underlined the growing role of fish farming in Sikkim’s rural economy. He shared that over 2,000 families are currently engaged directly or indirectly in fish farming, contributing to self-employment, nutrition, and local economic growth. “Your unwavering dedication is truly instrumental in advancing food security and rural economic progress,” said CM Tamang.
Highlighting success stories from Sikkim’s hill regions, the Chief Minister noted that several fish farmers have shown that aquaculture can thrive even in mountainous terrain with the right support and determination. Their achievements have encouraged more people to adopt fish farming not just as an occupation, but as a viable and profitable livelihood.
CM Tamang expressed optimism about the increasing interest among youth in the fisheries sector, particularly in modern techniques like Recirculatory Aquaculture Systems (RAS) and Biofloc technology. He called this a “clear indication” of a bright future for aquaculture in the state.
In a major announcement, the Chief Minister revealed plans to introduce Organic Fish Farming in Sikkim. This initiative, supported by the Government of India, aligns with the state’s long-standing organic vision and is expected to create new market opportunities for fish farmers while promoting environmentally sustainable practices.
“Our fish farmers are the silent contributors to our state's progress. Your work ensures nutrition, livelihood, and a strong rural economy,” said CM Tamang, applauding their commitment and hard work. He ended his address with a vision for the future: “Let us move forward together to build a Viksit Sikkim and contribute to a Viksit Bharat through sustainable fisheries development.”
