Strengthening its commitment to environmental responsibility, the Asamartha Sahitya Samiti of Duga village in Pakyong district has pledged to join the Plastic Freedom Challenge 2025, an initiative by Zero Waste Himalaya. The decision comes as part of the ongoing Zero Waste Duga campaign, which has been steadily gaining momentum in the region.
In a symbolic and forward-looking step, the President of Asamartha Sahitya Samiti, along with executive committee members and local samaj members, pledged to follow strict guidelines aimed at completely eliminating single-use plastics. The commitment is not limited to the Independence Day 2025 celebrations but extends well beyond, signalling a sustained effort to build a cleaner, greener community.
The Zero Waste Duga initiative was launched earlier this year in connection with The Himalayan Cleanup 2025 and World Environment Day 2025. It has since evolved into a collaborative environmental movement supported by the Duga Samaj, Panchayat Duga, GVK Central Pendam Gram Panchayat Unit, and the Block Development Office of Duga BAC. The campaign focuses on reducing waste generation at its source, promoting alternatives to plastics, and engaging the community through awareness drives and hands-on activities.
