The Director General of Police (DGP) of Sikkim, Akshay Sachdeva, addressed a gathering at the 3rd India Reserve Battalion (IRBn) headquarters in Manglay during the celebrations of Sikkim’s 50th year as a full-fledged state of India.
In his speech, DGP Sachdeva looked back at Sikkim’s journey since it became a state in 1975. He praised the role of Sikkim Police in maintaining peace, law and order, and in serving the public with honesty and dedication. He said the police force has grown stronger and more committed with time, adapting to new challenges and changing needs of society.
Speaking on behalf of the police force, he said, “Our work is difficult, but today we are proud to present our artistic talents to the public. This is a rare opportunity for us to show another side of our personalities, and we are grateful.”
He also thanked the Chief Minister of Sikkim for his constant encouragement and support. “It is due to the Chief Minister’s blessings and motivation that we are able to keep improving,” said DGP Sachdeva. He said that the Chief Minister had recently encouraged the police to come forward and take part in cultural events and public programs, which is a positive step in building stronger police-public relations.
One of the key highlights of his address was the police department’s ongoing crackdown on drug trafficking. He reported that under the guidance of district Superintendents of Police (SPs), strong action has been taken against the drug menace, which is a top priority for the state government.
“In Namchi district, the police recently seized heroin worth Rs 70 lakh and arrested a key gang leader running a major drug racket,” he said. He added that this success is the result of hard work and vigilance by the local police teams.
He also listed police stations across the state including those in Malli, Namchi, Rangpo, Singtam, Gangtok, Nayabazar and Gyalshing that are actively involved in the anti-drug campaign. “Even in the North District, the SP is taking strict action against drug peddlers,” he said.
DGP Sachdeva especially praised the constables, calling them the backbone of the force. “Our constables are our strength. They are the ones who are always first to respond, and they are doing their duties with great courage,” he added.
He also spoke about the health and fitness of the force, mentioning that commandants and officers are leading fitness programs, route marches, and regular exercises to keep the force active and ready. “We are not only strong in discipline but also in health and fitness,” he said.
DGP Sachdeva promised that the Sikkim Police will continue to modernize with better equipment, wireless systems, and mobility to serve the public more efficiently. “We are always ready to protect and serve the people of Sikkim,” he said.
