The Health & Family Welfare Department, Government of Sikkim, under the National AYUSH Mission, has launched an awareness campaign emphasizing the importance of mental health and urging individuals to seek help for depression. The initiative aims to reduce stigma and encourage early intervention for those experiencing persistent symptoms of depression.

According to the campaign, depression is a serious mental health condition that can affect anyone, regardless of age, gender, or background. The advisory highlights key emotional, physical, cognitive, and behavioral symptoms associated with depression, urging individuals to recognize the warning signs and seek medical assistance if symptoms persist for more than two weeks.

Common emotional signs include persistent sadness, anxiety, mood swings, feelings of hopelessness, and irritability. Physically, individuals may experience chronic fatigue, changes in sleep patterns, unexplained aches, or weight fluctuations. The campaign also warns against cognitive symptoms like impaired concentration, self-criticism, and suicidal thoughts. Withdrawal from social activities, neglect of responsibilities, and decreased interest in daily life are also red flags.

The department has stressed that depression is a medical condition, not a personal weakness. "If disease does not discriminate, why do we?" the campaign questions, calling for empathy and support.

To ensure timely help, the government has provided a crisis helpline for individuals in distress: 18003453225 / 03592-202111 / 14416.

Officials urge citizens to reach out, emphasizing that professional support can make a difference. "Mental health is as important as physical health. Seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness," the advisory states.
