The 262nd birth anniversary of Bhagwan Mahavir, the 24th Tirthankara of Jainism, was celebrated with great devotion and reverence at the Mahavir Janm Kalyan Mahotsav in Siliguri today. The event saw the participation of several devotees, spiritual leaders and public representatives, including Darjeeling MP and BJP National Spokesperson Raju Bista.

Speaking at the event, Raju Bista expressed his gratitude for being invited to such a sacred occasion. He said that the teachings of Bhagwan Mahavir especially the values of non-violence, truth, and compassion continue to guide people toward peace and inner strength. “This day is a reminder for all of us to reflect on our actions and to try and live in a more peaceful and compassionate way,” he said.

Bhagwan Mahavir’s teachings form the foundation of Jain philosophy. On this day, devotees take time to meditate, do charity, and renew their spiritual commitments. The four main principles taught by Bhagwan Mahavir — non-violence in thought, word, and deed; living truthfully; renouncing worldly attachments; and self-discipline — were discussed and reflected upon during the celebrations.

The Mahotsav not only marked the birth of Lord Mahavir but also served as a platform to spread his timeless message. Spiritual speakers at the event encouraged people to look inward and adopt a simpler, more meaningful life based on Mahavir’s ideals. They stressed that freedom from suffering and true happiness comes from letting go of ego and desires, and by living a life of honesty and kindness.

Raju Bista, in his address, said that Lord Mahavir’s vision of a just and peaceful society can inspire all Indians, regardless of religion or background. He praised the efforts of the Bhagwan Mahavir Janm Kalyan Mahotsav Samiti, Siliguri, for organizing the event and helping to spread the teachings of the Tirthankara.
