The Government of India has officially announced that the long-pending national Census will begin from March 1, 2027, across the country, while Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and the Union Territories of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh will see an earlier rollout from October 1, 2026.
Welcoming the move, Darjeeling MP and BJP National Spokesperson Raju Bista said the Census will play a crucial role in shaping India’s developmental roadmap. “The data collected will serve as the foundation for national planning, development programs, and resource allocation over the next decade,” he stated in a press release issued on Monday.
According to the Office of the Registrar General, preparations are already underway to ensure accuracy and inclusivity, with special focus on reaching remote and tribal regions such as the Darjeeling hills, Terai, and Dooars.
For the first time, the Census will incorporate digital tools, including mobile applications and an online self-enumeration portal to streamline data collection and improve efficiency.
Bista called upon citizens to participate actively and provide truthful information to enumerators, highlighting the exercise as vital to achieving Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a Vikshit Bharat.
