Darjeeling Member of Parliament Raju Bista expressed his gratitude to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for his support to the Gorkha community. Bista said, “I thank Hon’ble Chief Minister of Assam Sh. Himanta Biswa Sarma ji for always standing strongly with the Gorkha community.”

Chief Minister Sarma, in his statement said that he is committed to the welfare of Gorkhas across Assam.“I have Gorkha brothers and sisters with me. You are already aware that I have empowered the Gorkha community across Assam. Let it be clear: no Gorkhas of Assam should ever be called foreigners. I have also instructed the police to ensure that the rights of the Gorkha people are fully respected,” Sarma said.

The Chief Minister added that historically, the police were not fully aware of the rights of the Gorkha community, especially around 100–200 years ago. He said that the government is now taking steps to ensure that these rights are recognized and upheld.

Under his leadership, Sarma said the Gorkha community would benefit from modern administrative measures. “I urge all members of the BJP government to take necessary action to protect the Gorkha community. Under my system, you will receive OBC certificates and other official documents digitally, ensuring that you face no difficulties or harassment in public dealings,” he said.

Earlier on August 2, the Gorkha community warmly welcomed the grant of reserved status in the Tirap tribal belt. In a historic move aimed at addressing long-standing demands, the Assam Cabinet, under the leadership of Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma, approved a proposal to grant special reserved category status to six indigenous communities, including the Gorkhas, under Chapter X of the Assam Land and Revenue Regulation Act, 1886. This decision specifically covers the Tirap tribal belt of Tinsukia district.

This major policy step ensures that the Ahom, Moran, Motok, Chutia, Tea Tribes, and Gorkha communities are now recognized as protected groups eligible for land rights in these areas. It secures their constitutional and land ownership entitlements, providing long-awaited justice to many families. The All Assam Gorkha Sammelan (Central Committee) expressed heartfelt gratitude to Chief Minister Sarma, appreciating the efforts made over the years to secure land rights for the Gorkhas living in Tirap, who had long been denied their due.
