Darjeeling Member of Parliament and BJP National Spokesperson Raju Bista on Saturday visited the ongoing work site of the Sevoke-Rangpo Rail Line, a project of national importance aimed at improving connectivity in the region.

During the visit, IRCON officials briefed Bista on the progress of the project. They reported that 80% of the physical work has already been completed. Out of 14 tunnels, 12 have been finished, and 9 of the 13 bridges are ready. Track laying is currently underway, and officials confirmed that the railway line between Sevoke and Reang is expected to become operational by the end of this year, with the entire project slated for completion by 2027.

A recent slope failure near Tunnel No. 7 has raised concerns, but IRCON assured Bista that stronger safety protocols are being implemented to prevent accidents and ensure worker and passenger safety.

Speaking about the significance of the project, Bista said, “Once completed, the Sevoke-Rangpo Rail Line will provide seamless connectivity for people in our region and across Sikkim. It will link Rangpo to Sevoke and further connect to Siliguri, New Jalpaiguri, and Bagdogra Airport. This will be a major benefit for daily commuters, students, and businesses, as it will significantly reduce travel time and improve overall regional connectivity.”

Bista highlighted the broader economic impact of the project. “This rail line will boost tourism in the region and act as a major driver for the economy of Kalimpong, Darjeeling, Siliguri, the Terai and Dooars regions, and Sikkim. Improved connectivity will help local businesses grow, attract more tourists, and make life easier for residents who rely on this route for work and education,” he added.

The MP stated the importance of coordinated efforts to ensure timely completion of the project while maintaining high safety standards. “This is not just a railway project; it is a lifeline for the people and a major contributor to regional development. We will continue to work closely with IRCON, the Ministry of Railways, and all stakeholders to ensure the successful completion of the Sevoke-Rangpo Rail Line,” Bista said.
