Member of Parliament from Darjeeling and BJP National Spokesperson Raju Bista on Saturday visited several landslide-affected areas along National Highway 10 (NH-10), including Bhasua, Setijhora, and Selfie-Dara, to assess road conditions and ongoing repair work. NHIDCL, recently tasked with maintaining the 52.10 km Sevoke-Rangpo corridor, briefed him on the current situation and the steps being taken to restore connectivity.
At Bhasua, between Sevoke Bazar and Kalijhora, NHIDCL is widening a 150-meter section of the road by 12 meters, constructing a 38-meter slope protection wall, and improving drainage systems to reduce the risk of landslides. Officials explained that these measures are part of urgent efforts to stabilize the hillside and make travel safer for commuters.
Setijhora, however, remains a critical area. Major cracks in the road have made it unsafe for vehicles, and no further hill cutting is being carried out due to instability. NHIDCL is working on immediate tow protection measures and desilting parts of the Teesta River to prevent further damage. Experts highlighted the need for a long-term solution, such as road realignment or an elevated stretch, to ensure safety and sustainability in this high-risk zone. Wire duct lining technology is being used to counter ongoing land sinking in the area.
Selfie-Dara has been severely impacted by continuous landslides this monsoon. The road here is completely blocked by tons of earth and boulders, making travel between Sevoke, Kalimpong, and Gangtok nearly impossible. While NHIDCL has initiated clearance work, unstable slopes and persistent rainfall are slowing progress.
NHIDCL has appointed a Project Management Consultant to develop a long-term and sustainable plan for NH-10. Bista emphasized that addressing the crisis will require close coordination among NHIDCL, IRCON, and NHPC. He said he will take his observations and recommendations to the Central Government, State Government, and the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways to ensure a holistic approach.
“The safety of commuters and the stability of NH-10 are our top priorities,” Bista said. “We are committed to restoring reliable connectivity while planning for long-term solutions that will prevent future disruptions.”
