Darjeeling MP Raju Bista has condemned a violent attack on Hindu families near Tumbajote in Matigara, which occurred on May 31. According to Bista, a group of over 100 individuals, allegedly linked to a radical Islamist organization, carried out a targeted assault on homes and businesses, grievously injuring several people, including women and children. He also claimed the attackers attempted to behead Hindu youths.

In his statement, Bista expressed deep concern that instead of apprehending the attackers, the West Bengal Police arrested Hindu youths who were defending themselves. “This is simply unacceptable,” he said, calling the police action unjust and the administration’s response a failure to protect innocent citizens.

He also highlighted the growing number of illegal Rohingya settlements in the strategically sensitive “Chicken Neck” region, alleging that these areas are becoming unsafe due to the rise of radical ideologies. He warned that places like Matigara are turning into hubs for drug trafficking, human trafficking, and the circulation of fake currency, with no concrete action from the authorities despite public awareness.

Referring to a previous incident involving the alleged assault and murder of a Gorkha schoolgirl by a youth from the same locality, Bista said the current situation points to a pattern of violence being overlooked by the state.

Bista has urged the Union Home Minister to launch an investigation by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) into the Matigara incident, expressing concern that the attack may be part of a broader trend seen earlier in Murshidabad and Malda.

“I am warning the administration; if such unprovoked attacks continue, the people will respond. The residents of Siliguri and surrounding areas will not remain silent spectators,” Bista said. He demanded the immediate identification and arrest of the attackers within 24 hours and held the state government responsible for any law and order breakdown.

At the same time, he appealed to citizens to maintain peace and harmony. “Do not fall prey to provocation. Our unity is our strength,” he added.
