Culture department employee found dead in Tadong, man arrested

In Gangtok's Tadong, a woman working in the Culture Department was found dead in her rented house on Monday. The police have registered a case and arrested a man in connection with the incident.

According to the Sadar Police Station, FIR No. 123/2025 was lodged on 8th September 2025 under Section 103 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023. The FIR was filed by Santa Kr. Chettri, 44, of Lingdok, Gangtok, reporting that his sister, Hema Devi Chettri had been absent from her workplace since 6th September 2025.

The informant, along with his sister and niece, visited Hema Devi’s rented residence at SNT Colony, Daragaon, Tadong around 3 PM on Monday. They found her slippers outside her room and an unknown person inside. On entering the room, they discovered Hema Devi’s lifeless body lying on the bed.

The man inside the room was later identified as Javed Ansari, also known as Jabir, 40, son of the late Rajiv Ansari, a resident of Namchi presently staying in Daragaon, Tadong, Gangtok. He was immediately taken into custody after undergoing medical examination at STNM Hospital.

The police have confirmed that the case is under active investigation. They are examining all possible angles to determine the circumstances leading to the death.
