Soreng District Police on Sunday apprehended a government employee and seized a sizable quantity of suspected contraband substances in a targeted operation. The arrest took place at Chakung Gate, just above the District and Sessions Judge Court in Soreng, around 6:30 PM on July 6.

The suspect, identified as Binod Chettri, a resident of Dodak, Soreng, was traveling in a daily taxi service — a Bolero bearing registration number SK02J/1340, operating from Siliguri to Soreng. Chettri, who works as a Lower Division Clerk (LDC) at the Block Administrative Centre (BAC), Soreng, was already under surveillance for some time, according to police officials.

Acting on credible intelligence inputs, a team from the Soreng Police Station intercepted the vehicle at the checkpoint. The search, conducted in the presence of the Block Development Officer (BDO), Soreng, led to the recovery of a dark brown cloth pouch containing 127 loose tablets and a file of blue-coloured Proximec Spas — a drug often misused for recreational purposes.

A case has been formally registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, and further investigations are underway to uncover possible links to larger networks or repeat offenses. The police have not ruled out the possibility of more arrests in the coming days.
