In a move to strengthen Sikkim’s resolve against the growing menace of substance abuse, Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang on Wednesday warned that any government employee found using drugs would face immediate termination. He also announced that surprise drug testing would soon begin across departments to ensure accountability and integrity within the government system.
Addressing a packed auditorium at Manan Kendra in Gangtok during a state-level event to observe the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, CM Tamang reaffirmed his government’s commitment to making Sikkim a drug-free state. The event was organised by the Social Welfare Department and saw participation from key state leaders including Speaker M.N. Sherpa, Deputy Speaker Raskumari Thapa, Social Welfare Minister Sanjeet Lepcha, MLAs, senior police officials, school heads, NGO representatives, volunteers, and hundreds of students.
“Substance abuse is not a distant problem—it is here, in our homes, in our neighbourhoods, endangering our future,” said CM Tamang in a powerful keynote speech. “This is not merely a government programme. It is a people's movement that requires sustained awareness, compassion, and unified action.”
Highlighting the dangerous impact of drugs on Sikkim’s youth, CM Tamang urged families, educational institutions, law enforcement agencies, and community organisations to join hands in addressing the crisis. He called upon the state’s young citizens to reject drugs and embrace a healthier path, promising support for those seeking rehabilitation and fresh opportunities.
He further said that strict action would be taken against government employees involved in drug use, including surprise checks and zero-tolerance enforcement. “There will be no place in public service for anyone who endangers society through drug abuse,” he said.
