Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang on Thursday announced a free coaching programme for students of Sikkim aspiring to appear for competitive examinations like UPSC, NDA, and other national-level services. The announcement was made during the 79th Independence Day celebrations at Paljor Stadium in Gangtok, where the Chief Minister hoisted the National Flag and addressed a large gathering of citizens, officials, and students.

Calling the day a “true honour,” Tamang said that Independence Day is not only a moment to remember the sacrifices of freedom fighters but also an occasion to celebrate the achievements of the people of Sikkim. The new coaching initiative, he added, is aimed at creating more opportunities for Sikkimese youth and equipping them with the skills and knowledge needed to compete at the highest levels.

The celebrations at Paljor Stadium were marked by a grand parade, cultural programmes, and the presentation of awards and honours in recognition of service and excellence. Gallantry Awards, Police Medals, and the Chief Minister’s Police Medal for Meritorious Service (Police & Rajya Sainik Board Department) were conferred on officers for their courage and dedication. State Meritorious Service Awards and a Special Posthumous Award (Home Department) were also presented to recognise extraordinary contributions.

Students who secured top ranks in the Class X and XII Board Examinations 2024–25 were felicitated with the State Meritorious Awards, highlighting the government’s commitment to encouraging academic excellence. Tamang also presented the Chief Minister’s Award for Best Performing Cooperative Societies under the Cooperation Department and honoured outstanding sportspersons of the state with the State Sports Awards. In addition, recipients of the Shrawan Kumar Awards, a flagship scheme of the state government, were given recognition for their exemplary service.

The event also witnessed the launch of several key publications and digital initiatives, reflecting the government’s focus on modernisation and transparency. Among these were:

A book on Ecclesiastical Affairs of Sikkim and the Artisans/Weaver Database (Ecclesiastical Department),

The Sikkim State Data Policy (Information Technology Department),

The Paper Lottery Management Software (Lottery Department), and

The official website of the Information & Public Relations Department.

In his speech, the Chief Minister highlighted the importance of recognising the dedication and commitment of individuals across various fields, from police personnel to students, sportspersons, and cooperative societies. He emphasised that these recognitions serve not only as honours for the recipients but also as inspiration for the larger community.

The atmosphere at Paljor Stadium was filled with patriotic spirit as people gathered in large numbers to witness the Independence Day programme. Families, students, and members of civil society joined government officials and dignitaries to celebrate the day with pride. The stadium was decorated with the national colours, and cultural performances by local groups showcased the rich traditions of Sikkim.

Speaking about the newly announced free coaching programme, Tamang said that the government is committed to empowering the youth of Sikkim. He explained that the scheme will provide structured guidance and professional support for aspirants preparing for some of the toughest examinations in the country. “It is our duty to ensure that our young minds are given every possible opportunity to realise their dreams,” he said.

The Chief Minister concluded his address by calling for unity, hard work, and a shared commitment towards building a strong and prosperous Sikkim. “On this proud day, let us not only remember our past but also dedicate ourselves to shaping a better future for our state and our nation,” Tamang said.
