Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang announced a 30:70 promotion-to-recruitment ratio for teacher appointments in Sikkim, reaffirming his government’s commitment to strengthening the education system and addressing long-standing demands of the teaching community. The announcement was made during the State-level Teachers’ Day celebration at Manan Kendra, where teachers from across the state were honored for their contribution to society.
“I extend my warmest greetings to all teachers and honor those who helped lay the foundation of education in Sikkim. Let us also remember the visionary teachers who contributed to our state’s educational history, even before modern policies were implemented,” he said.
The Chief Minister, who himself began his career as a teacher, spoke with deep emotion about his personal experiences in the classroom. “I stand before you not only as your Chief Minister but also as a former teacher. The experiences as a teacher gave me deep insight into the life of a teacher, their daily struggles, and the lack of resources they often face. The lessons I learned during those years continue to guide me,” he shared.
Calling teachers the “builders of society, state, and nation,” Tamang emphasized that teaching is not just a profession but a lifelong service. He said teachers are the torchbearers who remove ignorance by lighting the lamp of knowledge. “Respect and honor cannot be demanded but must be earned through service. Teachers plant the seeds of confidence, curiosity, and creativity in students, helping them turn their dreams into reality,” he noted.
The Chief Minister also outlined his government’s vision to transform Sikkim into an Education Hub. He stressed the need for accessible and quality education, highlighting ongoing efforts to modernize infrastructure, improve resources, and address systemic challenges. “Our government is deeply committed to empowering teachers, and I strive every day to ensure that they receive the respect and justice they deserve,” he said.
Tamang added that the new 30:70 promotion-to-recruitment ratio will not only boost opportunities for existing teachers but also create a transparent and fair system of appointments. The policy, he said, reflects the government’s determination to balance experience with fresh talent in the education sector.
